History of Honda's Type R

History - Honda's Type R

Honda almost did not become a car manufacturer at all. In the late 60's the powerful MITI, the Japanese Ministry for Industry basically forbade Honda from manufacturing cars and told them to stick to motorcycles. Thankfully they never listened and although they struggled in the early years their breakthrough came in the form of the first oil crisis in 1973. Suddenly frugal small cars were in demand and Honda flourished.

As much as we can appreciate the first generation Miata (or NA) for what it offered (lightweight, no frills motoring, compactness and agililty), its time was pretty much over when the Honda S2000 appeared on the scene.

Cult Car Central status report- Honda S2000

Honda announced in 1999 that they were about to launch a remake of their S500/600 convertible of the late 60s, a tiny but stunning triumph of engineering over the odds. With a 600cc four cylinder engine that had four side draught Kehin carbs, 16-valves, Double Over Head cams, needle roller main bearings and an unbelievable rpm limit of 11,000 rpm! It was rear driven but via chains to solve the problem of the suspension movement.
