Fun Runt : MINI Coupe JCW [Driven]

The new MINI story under the aegis of BMW has been an interesting one. When BMW bought the Rover group from British Leyland and subsequently sold off Rover, Land Rover and Jaguar we were surprised to find BMW wanted to keep the MINI brand.

Obviously BMW had found the MINI brand a good fit with the rest of the BMW range instead of the overlapping product range offered by Jaguar, Rover and Land Rover. Besides they had spent billions on the new MINI and wanted to recoup that expenditure by nurturing the brand instead of just selling it off.

However observers noted that it would be a perilous time for MINI as it was going to be a single model brand. The only other single model brand was Porsche and with just the 911 to sell, took them to the brink of a disaster. It took them a while to become successful once again but that was because they had become a multiple model brand which included SUVs and sports saloons as well. We are glad to see the MINI blossom into a multiple model line up but we were still surprised to see the MINI Coupe introduced.

Perfectly cute : MINI Coupe [Release]

MINI gives the small car segment another fascinating injection of variety with the presentation of the first two-seater in the brand’s current model range. The MINI Coupé represents the faithful transposition of the brand’s sporting DNA into a cutting-edge vehicle concept with a new interpretation of the super-compact sports car class; unrivalled handling agility and the best performance figures in the model portfolio.

New expression of the distinctive MINI design with extremely high emotional appeal; unique proportions created by distinctive “helmet roof” design; extraordinarily sporty presence with sharply raked A-pillars; hallmark MINI structuring of body, wrap-around glass areas and superimposed roof; characteristic design principles and exclusive MINI details underline its brand identity.

MINI Rocketman Concept [2011 Geneva Motor Show]

The creation of innovative concepts for urban mobility has seen MINI grow into the successful brand we know today. A constant stream of new ideas from its beginnings more than 50 years ago to the present day have ensured that driving fun has continued to grow even though space on our roads has become ever tighter. Underpinning this success has been the creative use of space, a principle that enters new territory with the MINI Rocketman Concept.

The study car harks back to the classic Mini in terms of its exterior dimensions, while its technology points to the future of automotive design.

A 3+1-seater with 3 doors and a length of just over 3 metres, the MINI Rocketman Concept responds to the fundamental requirements of mobile lifestyles in the big cities of the future by pooling the brand’s core values in concentrated form. Ingenious functionality, smile-inducing agility, exceptional efficiency and irresistible design come together into an extraordinarily attractive and groundbreaking, yet typically MINI, subcompact car concept for the premium segment.

Known for its once-diminutive proportions, the cherubic MINI brand has become a veritable marketing juggernaut with a zealous cult following that counts creative types, fashionistas and even driving enthusiasts within the fold.

The mere hint that we had the latest 'MINI' on test was sufficient to provoke reactions that varied only insofar as the level of the decibels being shrieked down the phone.

Such is the brand's success and instant recognition that it no longer matters much which MINI one drives, just as long as it's a MINI! This last point is hammered home when one takes into account the fact that for the longest time, the MINI was virtually a mono-product brand (coupe and convertible) that only recently saw the addition of the Clubman (we seriously enjoyed the Clubman Cooper S; read more about our drive HERE) and now, the Countryman range, to its model line-up.
