Honda's Firecracker- Honda Integra Type R (DC2)

It was curious to see what Honda was planning as a counter measure to the remarkable success of the Subaru WRX. Honda, a company that prides itself in engine technology, seemed for a time to concentrate too much on trying to satisfy the mass market with popular models like the Accord and Civic. However the company has seen a resurgence of its former self, the persona that helped it to seven consecutive Formula One championships and a string of Indy Car wins.

Mention the term, 'Hot Hatch', and enthusiasts in Singapore are more inclined to think of Japanese models like the Daihatsu Charade GTti, Suzuki Swift GTI and the ubiquitous Honda Civic VTI/SiR hatchbacks.

As much as VW is commonly credited with shoe-horning a sporty engine into the first Golf (to create the GTI variant), the first 'hot-hatch' can actually be attributed to the French, namely Renault, when the naturally-aspirated Renault 5 Gordini was first introduced (not to be confused with the Renault 5 GT Turbo of the 1980s; the 5 Gordini Turbo was the turbocharged variant of the 5 Gordini) just 1 year before the arrival of the production Golf GTI in 1977.

Porsche's First GT3 is a Huge Hit : Porsche 911 GT3 (996 Mk 1) [review]

Hindsight they say is 20:20 and by the time Porsche attempted the 996 GT3 for the first time they had already three generations worth of RS (Porschespeak for Renn Sport) versions. The original 2.7 RS was the true stripped down racer and back then Porsche was certainly not in the luxury game, all their cars being serious driving machines.

AMG's Silver Hammers : The Evolution of the Compact AMG

As the top model of the current C-Class generation, the new C 63 AMG can look back at an impressive heritage. It has four direct predecessors (C 55 AMG, C 32 AMG, C 43 AMG and C 36 AMG), all of which are powerful AMG high-performance vehicles.

5 for Fighting : Audi TT RS Roadster

When news first broke at the 2009 Geneva Show that the hottest RS version of Audi's iconic TT Coupe and Roadster would be powered by a turbocharged 2.5L in-line 5-cylinder engine, we didn't really give it a second thought. In today's context, as the TT RS Coupe and Roadster start to arrive in Singapore, we find ourselves actually heaving a sigh of relief as we think, "Thank God it isn't another turbo'd 2L!"

Calling any car 'R' or 'R something/anything' typically invites the most intense scrutiny from us know-it-all critics :). Like many of the finer things in life, everybody has a different opinion of what the 'R' quality should be about, but who's to say everyone else is wrong (or for that matter, right)?

Audi's RS Legacy

The RS models

With their high-performance engines and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, the Audi RS models have formed the dynamic spearhead of the Audi model program since 1994. quattro GmbH has been responsible for these vehicles since 2000.

Perfect 10s : Audi R8 5.2 FSI & RS 6 Avant

To most people, different form factors offer different levels of appeal. Of course, this seems reasonable enough until you realise these are the same people who would consider a Korean coupe with a middling 2L a 'sportscar', yet turn their noses up at one of Ingolstadt's finest just because it takes the form of a wagon (or Avant, in Audi-speak)... but have we mentioned the twin-turbo'd V10 engine at the heart of the RS 6 Avant yet?

We can probably never say this enough, but BMW 'M' badged cars are quite possibly the most engaging vehicles in the rarefied clique of high-performance sports cars. Of course, we don't just mean 'engaging' in terms of handling dynamics, but also in the emotional sense.

Fresh Air : 911 (964) RS... The Second Chapter

Cult Car Central revisits the Porsche 911 (964) Carrera RS

Original Registration: August 1992

Original CCC report here

Porsche had made the 911 2.7 RS 19 years before the 964 RS and so continues a tradition of lightweight homologation specials. Porsche introduced the 964 RS in 1992 - only the second RS in Porsche's history.

It's hard to call any Porsche truly beautiful but the 911's iconic shape has a rather evergreen appeal. The 964 shape is the last of the true 911 shapes with the upright headlamps.
