Phil Quaife to drive MP4-12C GT3 at Spa [Release]

McLaren GT has confirmed that Kent racer Phil Quaife will drive one of its all-new MP4-12C GT3 cars at this weekend’s prestigious Total 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium, where the car will make its 24 hour racing debut.

Phil, whose Le Mans Series outfit CRS Racing is playing a leading role in the development of the 12C GT3, will join regular team mate Adam Christodoulou, as well as fellow CRS stablemates Glynn Geddie and Roger Wills, at the wheel of the #60 VonRyan Racing-run Pro-Am Cup entry. Car 60 is one of three MP4-12C GT3s competing at this year’s event.

It will be the first time a McLaren has debuted at an international 24 hour race since its iconic F1 GTR won overall at Le Mans in 1995. The 12C GT3 began the racing element of its development programme at Spa-Francorchamps by taking pole position on its British GT Championship debut earlier this month.

Quaife will draw on recent experience of twice-round-the-clock events after contesting such races at the Nurburgring and in Dubai this season. The 25-year-old also knows the famous Ardennes circuit well having raced there in a variety of GT cars over the past five years, while his only 24 Hours start came there in 2009, also with CRS Racing.

Phil said: “I'm delighted to have been selected by McLaren GT to play a part in developing the 12C GT3.

“McLaren GT is able to draw on its McLaren Racing experience in Formula 1 and blend that with CRS Racing’s GT car expertise. The 12C GT3 was reliable at the British GT outing earlier this month and I can’t wait to test it at Spa.

“This is a unique opportunity for me to drive a McLaren race car and I intend to enjoy every moment.”

The 2011 Total 24 Hours of Spa takes place this Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July.
