An exploit that has ‘shortened’ the Nordschleife…
Renault Sport established its first lap record for a front-wheel drive production car at the Nordschleife on June 23, 2008. The time of 8m17s posted that day by Mégane R26.R. demonstrated that a showroom-specification front-wheel drive car could beat many models produced by some elite specialist brands and tuners.
On June 17, 2011, it was the turn of Mégane R.S. Trophy – a new limited-edition version of Mégane R.S. – to beat the time by 9 seconds, a lap record that has stood for three years in the firm grasp of its predecessor.

Cult Car Central revisits the Renault Clio 172 Mk 1
As much as VW is commonly credited with shoe-horning a sporty engine into the first Golf (to create the GTI variant), the first 'hot-hatch' can actually be attributed to the French, namely Renault, when the naturally-aspirated Renault 5 Gordini was first introduced (not to be confused with the Renault 5 GT Turbo of the 1980s; the 5 Gordini Turbo was the turbocharged variant of the 5 Gordini) just 1 year before the arrival of the production Golf GTI in 1977.

The latest addition to the Renault Sport family is Megane R26.R, a car that has been engineered for performance and extreme driving enjoyment.
Megane R26.R is based on Megane F1 Team R26 and uses the same engine, gearbox and limited slip differential, but has been lightened by 123kg and features specific suspension calibration.
On June 23, 2008, Megane R26.R established a new lap record for its category round the legendary Nürburgring in Germany with a time of 8m 17s which confirms its extreme performance calling. It is easily recognizable thanks to its carbon bonnet, while its sporty credentials are immediately apparent inside, too, with its Sabelt bucket seats and harness belts.
Megane R26.R is a limited edition model manufactured at the Alpine Renault factory in Dieppe, France. Total production has been restricted to just 450 cars. Following its unveiling at the London Show, Megane R26.R is due to go on sale in October 2008 (price in France: 34 900 euros).
